I wish I could express my feelings for you in a song, but I don't know how to play any instruments. So I guess I'll do it in a poem.

Unrequited Drive

Driving in your car, your navy blue car
Your hands gripping the steering wheel
My hands grasped the controls of tunes
The time is dark, the view is blank
Upwards, the moon shines quarters
You strike up conversation
All about the small stars in hiding,
only shown when the sky is clear
Awkward silence falls between us
soon we'll reach the finish line
Eyes locked as we come to a stop
you clear your throat and avoid gaze
I'm all over you
I'm not over you

EXPLANATION

This is probably the first poem I've written that is fully influenced by someone and something that's happened to me. I was driving with a friend of mine from college in his car. He gave me the option to choose the songs to listen to for our drive back from the event we had gone to, and during the time of this poem, All over You by The Spill Canvas was playing. We were driving around 11PM, and the sky was pitch dark. He had the car's lights on as we drove down an empty highway that seemed to go endlessly. I was looking out the window, and I think he had noticed because he had brought up a conversation about how stars are barely viewable in Texas because of pollution (I had only been in Texas for about two months around this time). The drive, at least I felt, was very awkward, because neither of us are really people who start conversations. At one point we reached a stop light, and I had been watching him drive around this time, and we made eye contact when he came to a stop. He had turned his head to look the other way out his window and cleared his throat, which made it all the more awkward for the both of us. When he did this, the lyrics "I'm all over you, I'm not over you" played from the song. By that point, I had been engulfed in my own thoughts; I was always so confused when I tried assuming back and forth what he thought of me and what I thought of him but I never had the courage to approach him about it. I felt like a coward. I didn't know if he viewed the term "dating" the same as I did, and I felt too scared to bring it up with the worry of ruining our friendship. As for me personally, I view dating (the "status") as being your usual selves, but unlike friends, we have a special bond that only relationships can form. From that point, the second chorus of the song had played, queuing the "Just want you to love me back, why can't you just love me back?". The title comes from the inspiration of unrequited love, but since we were driving, it's been replaced with unrequited drive. A love that can never be reciprocated. Also, the fact that I can't drive.

SONG CHOICE

I chose All over You by The Spill Canvas as the poem's song representation because, well, it's in the poem. Self-explanatory. I highly suggest you read the poem while listening to the song.

You said you're not ready
and I understand it clearly
when you say such things
I can't help but hope
our friendship was a little more
My thoughts contemplate,
what's so different to add status
We'll still be the same,
best friends and all,
only this time I can say you're mine
Just want you to love me back
Why can't you just love me back?
